LAWKS A MERCY! I love this series -I read them all several years ago, and they were the first series my younger brother read on his own - I love them. Freaking love Halt xD

I didn't particularly like the series.

1) Writing quality. Blech. Almost a nightmare.

2) Originality. Lack thereof. Rangers were stolen from Lord of the Rings. Stolen. :P That much irked me. Various cultures in later books are all based off of real-world, Middle-Ages cultures such as the Vikings, Arabians, Angles, etc.

3) Cussing. There's a lot of it in later books.

4) There is pretty much zero depth. The characters are always the same, and they always come out conveniently unscathed. :P And not much meaningfulness to it either...

Other than that, the dialogue was clever and I like the way Flanagan wrote it, and the plot is fairly good. :)

Not to spoil your love or anything XD Glad you like it! :D

I read the first book and, while it *was* interesting, it didn't grab me enough to prompt me to pick up the other books. I agree with what Jake said, in that true depth was lacking -- both in characterization and otherwise.

I love these books. I'm a little frustrated with John Flanagan because he just keeps writing them, and in my opinion he should have wrapped it up way before book 10, or whatever, but I really enjoy them! I actually own them up to book 6. I love the fact that they're a quick read, but they're totally worth it!
